Why Fit Matters More Than Colour for Women's Hi-Vis
The Problem with Unisex Hi-Vis for Women
Most UK workwear suppliers sell "unisex" hi-vis that is really just a men's garment offered in smaller sizes. The proportions are wrong — wider shoulders, longer torso, straighter cut through the chest — and the result is a garment that doesn't sit properly on a woman's frame. That isn't a comfort issue alone. It's a compliance issue.
EN ISO 20471 specifies minimum areas and placement positions for fluorescent background fabric and retroreflective tape. When a garment is too wide or too long, the tape shifts during physical movement — bending, reaching, climbing — and can fall outside the zones the standard requires. A garment that technically passed certification on a mannequin can fail in practice on a body it wasn't designed for.
Fit affects safety directly: a hoodie or polo that rides up, bunches under a harness, or has sleeves past the wrist interferes with movement, catches on equipment, and reduces the visibility the garment was supposed to provide. Women-specific cut isn't a luxury — it's the minimum requirement for the garment to do its job.
Which Garment Fits Your Role?
Choosing between a hoodie and a polo depends on your working environment and the season.
Outdoor construction — cold months
Hi-vis fleece hoodies. Pullover or full-zip. Polyester fleece keeps warmth in without bulk. Yellow, orange, pink or black options.
Warehouse & logistics
Hi-vis polo shirts. No hood to catch on racking. Moisture-wicking polyester mix. Professional collar appearance.
Roadside & highways
Orange hi-vis specifically — typically the required colour for work near live traffic. Available in both hoodie and polo styles.
Events, fundraising & volunteering
Pink hi-vis hoodies. Stand out from standard yellow or orange while still providing genuine reflective visibility.
Pink Hi-Vis — Is It Compliant?
Pink hi-vis garments with retroreflective tape provide genuine visibility. The fluorescent pink fabric is highly visible in daylight, and the reflective tape performs identically to tape on yellow or orange garments in low-light conditions. Whether pink meets your specific site's PPE policy depends on the site — some principal contractors specify yellow or orange only, while others accept any garment with reflective tape and fluorescent background material. Check your site requirements before ordering if you need pink specifically for site use rather than events or volunteering.
Care That Keeps Your Hi-Vis Compliant
All our womens hi vis workwear is machine washable at 40°C. Use non-biological detergent without optical brighteners — brightening agents affect fluorescent dyes and reduce visibility over time. Do not tumble dry. Line dry on a hanger or flat to preserve shape and brightness. Avoid fabric softener. The full detail on what shortens the lifespan of hi-vis garments is in our wash care guide.
