How to Wash Hi-Vis Clothing Without Damaging It
Hi-vis workwear is tougher than it looks — but wash it wrong and you'll destroy the very properties that keep you safe on site. Fluorescent fabric fades. Reflective tape peels. And a faded, worn hi-vis garment may no longer meet the EN ISO 20471 standard required on your site.

Why Washing Hi-Vis Clothing Correctly Matters
High-visibility clothing works through two mechanisms — fluorescent fabric that glows in daylight and retroreflective tape that bounces light back at night or in low-light conditions. Both can be damaged by incorrect washing.
Fluorescent dyes are sensitive to high temperatures and harsh chemicals. Wash at too high a temperature or use the wrong detergent and the fabric loses its brightness — making you less visible even if the garment looks clean.
Reflective tape is bonded to the fabric using heat-sensitive adhesives. Tumble drying, ironing or using fabric softener can cause the tape to peel, bubble or detach — reducing or eliminating its reflective performance.

How to Wash Hi-Vis Clothing — Step by Step
Step 1 — Check the care label
Every hi-vis garment has a care label inside. Always read it before washing. The label will show the maximum washing temperature, whether tumble drying is permitted and any other specific care instructions. When in doubt, always wash cooler rather than hotter.
Step 2 — Wash at the right temperature
Most hi-vis workwear should be washed at a maximum of 40°C on a normal cycle. Some lighter performance garments — including activewear — should be washed at 30°C. Washing above the recommended temperature is the single most common cause of fluorescent fabric fading.

Avoid detergents marketed as "brightening" or "whitening" — these almost always contain optical brighteners. A standard non-bio detergent at the recommended dose is all you need.
Step 4 — Never use fabric softener

Tumble drying is one of the most damaging things you can do to hi-vis workwear. The heat loosens the adhesive bonding reflective tape to the fabric — causing it to peel, bubble or detach. Even on a low heat setting, repeated tumble drying will significantly reduce the lifespan of reflective tape.
Always line dry hi-vis workwear. Hang it in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight where possible — prolonged direct sunlight can also fade fluorescent fabric over time.
Step 6 — Do not iron
Ironing hi-vis workwear — particularly directly over reflective tape — damages the tape permanently. The heat melts the adhesive and causes the tape to distort, wrinkle or detach. If your hi-vis garments need to look smart, line dry them carefully and smooth out any creases by hand while damp.
Step 7 — Do not bleach
Bleach destroys fluorescent dyes rapidly and permanently. Even a small amount of bleach contact will leave visible pale patches on fluorescent fabric. Never use bleach or bleach-based stain removers on hi-vis clothing.
Step 8 — Wash separately or with similar colours
Wash hi-vis workwear separately from heavily soiled items where possible. Construction site dirt — particularly oil, grease and concrete — can be stubborn and may transfer to adjacent garments in the wash. Pre-treating heavy stains before washing is more effective than relying on the wash cycle alone.

How Many Washes Before Hi-Vis Clothing Needs Replacing?

Concrete and cement
Allow concrete stains to dry fully before attempting removal. Brush off as much as possible when dry, then soak in cold water before washing. Hot water sets concrete — always use cold for pre-soaking.
Paint
Water-based paint — remove while wet with cold water. Once dry, water-based paint is very difficult to remove without damaging the fabric. Oil-based paint is generally permanent on hi-vis fabric — if a significant area is affected the garment may need replacing.
Mud and soil
Allow to dry fully then brush off before washing. Washing mud while wet pushes it deeper into fabric fibres. A normal 40°C wash will handle most mud stains once the bulk has been removed dry.
